About Us

History

Justice Initiatives Global (“JI Global”) is a Kenyan not-for-profit organisation established in 2023. Founded by two directors with over three decades of experience in criminal justice reform globally, JI Global focuses on initiatives that influence prosecution, trial, sentencing and the rights of the accused. Recognizing the inconsistency and unpredictability in criminal justice responses in many countries, JI Global aims to establish an equitable system that addresses these issues comprehensively. Unlike many other organizations that focus on specific thematic areas, JI Global takes a holistic approach, focusing on the rights of the accused, all the way through the criminal justice pathway from prosecutions to fair trial and a consistent and proportionate approach to sentencing. JI Global works towards institutional change to ensure a deterrent effect in the criminal justice system in a way that enhances public confidence and creates peace and security for all.

Our Approach

1.

Protecting the rights of the accused.

Often enshrined in the Constitutions of the jurisdictions in which we work, we emphasize the need for a fair trial, proper representation, and a proportionate and consistent approach in the exercise of State powers in the criminal trial process.

2.

Robust prosecutions that are objective and accountable

We support prosecution authorities to develop and implement the required policies, protocols, and performance competencies to ensure the prosecution of the right person for the right crime in the right way.

3.

Speedy Trials

It is often said that “justice delayed is justice denied,” highlighting the critical nature of timely legal processes in ensuring fair and equitable outcomes for both the accused individuals and the victims involved in a criminal case. We work with prosecution and judicial authorities to find surgical solutions to the problem of ‘adjournment culture’ in the jurisdictions in which we work.

4.

Proportionate & Consistent Sentencing

Whilst no two crimes are the same, consistency in the approach to sentencing is vital to enhancing public confidence and mitigating corruption in the sentencing exercise.  We support a consistent and proportionate approach to sentencing through our targeted interventions with the prosecution and judicial authorities.
